  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle - For having such a rough year Sony has ended it with one of the most remarkable runs of 2017. After being #2 behind The Last Jedi for two weekends Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle managed to surpass TLJ and Insidious: The Last Key to be #1 with $36M. That marks a drop of just 25% from last weekend where notably it gained 38.4% from its opening. In fact it should be noted this weekend is just a 0.5% drop from the opening weekend, a truly remarkable achievement. These incredible drops and daily holds have pushed the domestic total of the film to $244.3M, which has surpassed Justice League making it the #9 highest grossing film of 2017. If that wasn't enough the film has also passed $500M worldwide, mostly lead by great runs in Australia and the UK. It is now the second best domestic release ever for Dwayne Johnson and the best release ever for Kevin Hart and Jack Black. So why is this thing just such a monster hit? Timing for one. If you ever wondered why a film that feels like a summer movie comes out in winter, this is why. You catch the right cultural zeitgeist and the holds are just incredible. While The Last Jedi has surpassed this film 2x over in every way, this film has clearly won the Word of Mouth lottery for the winter season. Sony really tapped into a perfect storm here: great timing, a good nostalgic property to remake, a film that's actually enjoyable, and a great A-list cast. A sequel is pretty much a guarantee at this point but it will be interesting to see how other studios try to recapture this perfect storm as the years go by.
  • Insidious: The Last Key - Blumhouse isn't wasted any time this year as they had the first wide release of 2018 and it's a pretty solid opening, as the fourth installment in the horror franchise opened to $29.2M at #2. The franchise seemed to be in a downward spiral after Insidious Chapter 3 ended up making less than the first film but it seems the minor rebranding of the series and the inclusion of a monster specifically tied to the film (a concept that has worked well for the Conjuring spin-offs) has paid off as this is the second best opening of the series and the 9th best opening for a Blumhouse film. However audiences may be feeling fatigued of the franchise as the film scored a B- on Cinemascore, the worst of the series but in the same range as the others films. With three new major releases coming next week don't be shocked if Insidious drops like a rock. Still let's not forget this film cost only $10M and has made $50M worldwide in its first week so don't expect this franchise to be declared dead any time soon.
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi - It was a rough week for the megahit as the film seems to be hitting the breaks pretty hard on its financial run, as this week it dropped from #1 to #3 with $23.5M. The holds for The Last Jedi have been anywhere from troubling to downright rough, but this weekend saw the film dropping 55%, the worst drop of any film in the top 20 the weekend (including Downsizing which dropped 650 theaters and still managed a better drop with 54.7%). Let's not forget that theaters were ordered to keep the film for four weeks on their biggest screens so anywhere it's underperforming can't wait to drop it for some fresh films. If that wasn't enough it's pretty much confirmed now that China just really couldn't care less about Star Wars, as TLJ had the worst opening ever for a Disney era Star Wars film, opening with $28.7M below the $30M opening for Rogue One and far below the $52.3M The Force Awakens. This isn't to say it's all bad, let's not dismiss that the film has passed $1.2B worldwide surpassing the lifetime gross of Minions to become the 13th highest grossing film worldwide and it remains the 6th highest grossing film domestically. But there's certainly a lot to be concerned about here. The film is now looking like it may not pass $660M domestic which means it will have a sub 3x multiplier, a usual hold for a film opening over $100M (for reference TFA had a 3.7x multiplier and Rogue One had a 3.4x multiplier). This is the timeframe where the backlash really takes hold as right now is when second, third, or fourth viewings take place. Also school is coming back so any kids who wanted to see it probably have by now. Doesn't help either that the film is the longest Star Wars film to date and reportedly had an original cut of over 3 hours. TLJ was always expected to make less than TFA but there is more to it than that. I don't want to blame it all one fan backlash but there's a level of disengagement here that should be very concerning for Disney, especially as they quietly worry if they have the first true Star Wars bomb on their hands with Solo fast approaching.
  • Oscar Movie Round-up - As the Golden Globes truly kicked off the countdown to Oscars this week, many contenders expanded this weekend hoping for a boost in their performance from the hype of the event. First up is Molly's Game which walked away with nothing last night but won the box office race as it added 1300 theaters and finished the weekend at #7 with $7M. The film's best hopes in screenplay were dashed but the film's interesting subject matter may be enough to make it a minor hit despite missing out on awards. Next up is Darkest Hour which last night proved to be one of the only locks of the year, as Gary Oldman seems to be beginning his march towards a Best Actor win when he won Best Actor in a Drama last night. That should help Darkest Hour but it's already doing quite well as this weekend it added 790 theaters to come in at #8 with $6.3M. The film has been an excellent expander and it should see a major boost next weekend. Meanwhile I, Tonya seems to be the film many are most excited to finally come to their town as it added 193 theaters this week to make $2.4M. The film won Best Supporting Actress last night but was shut out for the rest so it may not have quite the awards boost it needs, but the subject matter being at perfect nostalgic age means it could appeal to those who lived through it and those young enough to have not. It's arguable that last night The Post was the biggest Golden Globes loser if only that one of Seth Meyers' opening jokes was about how many awards it would win and it walked away with nothing. However what it did win this weekend was best per theater average, as it expanded to 36 theaters with $1.7M, a per theater average of $47,222. Now let's talk about the two biggest winners from last night. First up is Lady Bird which in the comedy category won Best Actress and Best Picture. The film added 170 theaters this weekend in anticipation and made $1.5M. Expect it to add more as will the next film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri which won the most awards last night with Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress in a Drama, and Best Picture - Drama. The film had been slipping a lot in the Oscar conversation but this could be the major boost the film needs to get some Oscar wins, especially in Actress and Screenplay. However the more immediate gain is box office as the film added 44 theaters this weekend and made $705K, but expect it to seek a major expansion next weekend as theater owners furiously slap Golden Globes winner stickers to every Three Billboards poster they have.
