[Discussion] Which of these characters sorely needs a solo series?
- Martian Manhunter - While he most famously had a 3-year 38-issue solo series from 1998-2001, he is best known as a staple of most Justice League lineups. Most attempts at a solo series only seem to last about a year with the most recent 12-issue solo series ending in 2020.
- Black Canary - Black Canary is another character who cannot seem to hold a solo series. Most attempts at a solo series only seem to last a year or less while a partnered series with Green Arrow lasted for 32 issues (2 and a half years). She is best known for her appearances on Birds of Prey or most Justice League lineups as a consistent mainstay. Her last 12-issue solo series ended in 2016.
- Zatanna - Best known as a member of the Justice League and Justice League Dark, Zatanna has had very few opportunities at a solo series. Her most recent solo series was a 16-issue run that ended in 2011.
- Booster Gold - While he has only had 2 solo series, both of them have done fairly well. The first attempt was a 2 year 25-issue run that ended in 1988 while the second attempt was a 4 year 49-issue run that ended in 2011. Booster continues to be a staple in most JLI reunion appearances or stories that involve time travel.
- Blue Beetle - Whether it's Ted or Jaime, both of them have never had a solo series reach the longevity of Dan's 11 year 59-issue run (1939 to 1950). Their best attempt was a 3 year 36-issue run that ended in 2009 that was very much at the bottom of the sales charts and yet DC kept the comic going. The most recent attempt was a 1 and a half year 19-issue run that ended in 2018. Just like Booster, Blue Beetle continues to be a staple of most JLI reunion appearances.

Shotgun Fantasy - Part 34: The World as Mana and its Variations
Throughout the past night, she was barely able to sleep because of all the new ideas running through her head. Merely knowing about the five fundamentals principles of mana had completely altered her perception of magic. It allowed her to gauge her strengths and weaknesses with simple exercises that also showed her several applications with practical uses. She needed a refresher once she started reading again, though. According to the introductory chapter, they were necessary to understand everything in the book so she wanted to make sure she got them right before diving deeper. Strengthening was the easiest to grasp. Everyone knew martial fighters used their mana to perform incredible feats of strength and durability. What surprised Lilac, though, was that this principle also explained how enchanted objects could be imbued with nigh indestructibility.
The next principle, evocation, shared the same amount of notoriety as strengthening. It was the ability to propel mana as crude energy. Laypeople just knew it as ‘the lightning bolt’ one, but it covered much more than that. Sound-based magic relied heavily on it, as well as any spell that required targets to be within sight. The biggest confusion about this principle was the fact that elemental spells like fireballs and ice storms were covered under it, which was only half-true. Changing mana into something else, be it a tangible construct or another state of energy, was conjuration, another principle. People were aware of its physical effects like creating weapons out of thin air or transforming your outer appearance, but its more important uses were misunderstood by anyone who wasn’t an advanced practitioner.
This underappreciation appeared to be a trait also shared by the fourth principle, called sensory, which gauged the range and precision of a mage’s ability to detect mana in an environment. This facilitated powerful tools like scrying that were the backbone of the Empire’s bureaucracy. Ultimately, however, it remained the least respected of the five principles due to its rarity and abstract nature. A good mage could tutor anyone to excel in every fundamental except for this one, since the best advice one could give was to just ‘sense better’, which only frustrated those who didn’t immediately grasp it. That didn’t mean it couldn’t be taught, though. Most people, even those less magically inclined, already used it at an instinctive level. The challenge lied in conscious application. Fighters and gamblers alike often used this principle to read their opponent’s emotions without even realizing it, allowing them to predict moves in the heat of battle while maintaining their composure.
The final principle was somewhat absent from the chapter that introduced these concepts. It was loosely referred to as ‘meta’ in the last few paragraphs, but that was it. Lilac stayed confused by this until turning the page. Then, she realized it was only omitted because the next chapter was entirely dedicated to explaining it. In essence, meta was a magic-user’s capacity to apply the other four principles together. This was alluded to previously when explaining elemental spells, where evocation and conjuration were used in unison, but the multitude of common examples couldn’t even begin to be listed.
Shield spells were a basic combination of conjuring a mana construct and strengthening it. Mind-reading mixed sensory and evocation. More shockingly, healing magic utilized all four principles at the same time, making it one of the hardests tasks to perform with mana. Lilac didn’t expect that. She had been casting simple healing spells ever since she was a young girl. It came naturally to her so she never questioned it. Amaranth was capable of it too. Lilac had vague memories of their mother mentioning it before she... wasn’t around anymore.
Either way, this knowledge gave Lilac some renewed vigor over the merit of her efforts. The book went on to explain that, although meta was the most difficult principle to master, it was also the easiest to train. All it required was diligent practice of the other four fundamentals. Many archmages never reached their full potential due to assuming that these principles were only useful for novices. A dangerous mistake. Others relied on gimmicks that initially carried them far, focusing solely on one or two principles, but leaving them unable to adapt once an enemy figured out their trick.
The best approach to getting better at meta, proposed the book, was a well-rounded one that slowly incorporated the principles until mastery was achieved. That didn’t mean one shouldn’t play to their strengths, though. The book actually encouraged its readers to start with the principle that drew their attention the most. Individuals were bound to always have one principle that was their main specialty and prioritizing it over the others would always produce the best results. It just meant that anyone who was interested in improving at magic needed to spend time on their fundamentals, including their weaknesses, if they were serious about it. Even the masters went back to the basics whenever they felt plateauing.
There were a myriad of unspoken benefits that emerged over time if one had patience. For example, with a good enough understanding of the meta principle, a mage could instantly deduce the nature of a spell and reproduce its effect within seconds of first seeing it. Neglecting the strengthening principle was also a common mistake done by many advanced mages. An archwizard should be capable of pulverizing a boulder many times their size with only their fist. There should only be very, very few exceptions to that, but the book kept bemoaning the fact that these standards were being lowered in wizard academies every few decades. The main point it kept trying to drive home was that the only entity who could ever claim to know everything about mana was Rigel, the god of magic itself. Any mortal pretending otherwise only admitted their own hubris.
Magic had its limits. The dead couldn’t be resurrected if their bodies weren't preserved or their souls had already transitioned into the divine realm. Anyone who attempted scrying into the future immediately lost their sanity for reasons unknown. Laypeople, however, always refused to understand this when confronted with unjust suffering, making it easy for bath-faith practitioners to prey on their ignorance.
That was why Inquisitors existed. They were the bridge between theology and magecraft that policed both sides. This role came with downsides, not only because they attracted ire from both sides, but because learning how to question things led to ideas some might consider heretical. Inevitably, studying the nature of mana made it impossible to not notice certain irregularities. Chief among them being the fact that humans had an aura despite lacking magical potential. The book then emphasized the difference between mana and aura, since the two were often used interchangeably by laypeople despite having different meanings.
Mana, in oversimplified terms, was a stream of energy that permeated all of physical reality, fueling the phenomenon known as magic. Aura, although related, was really a measure of how much mana an individual could displace around them. The analogy used to explain it was simple. If one were submerged at the bottom of the sea, mana would be the water and aura would be how big a bubble of air one could create around themselves if they could control said water. Lilac followed the book’s logic without trouble until it pointed out a glaring incongruity. What part of an individual actually displaced the mana then?
The easy answer would be to say souls generated an aura, but that would mean they weren’t made of mana, which only raised more questions about their essence. Many scholars arrived at the same conclusion, bringing attention to the concept of ‘Will’ as a suitable answer, but many also vehemently disagreed with that conclusion, citing many problems. The biggest, though, was how its implications went against the divine dogma, something that could earn the wrath of the gods.
Lilac frowned when the topic ended there. Elaborating on that statement seemed to be a later part of the book. The rest of the chapter reviewed all five fundamentals before repeating their importance and ended with an endearing reminder that having difficulties with these principles was a sign of progress; not stagnation.
It was almost time for breakfast by the time Lilac finished reading that section. A knock on the door immediately brought her back to reality. She had to begin her day soon. The book would have to wait. For some reason, that left her really irritated. Nothing had really changed. Waking up on someone else’s schedule was the same as being in prison… except with better food. Lilac then slowly realized why she was drawn to this tome. It provided her with a solution she desperately craved. If she studied its contents well, she would grow strong enough to elude Cithrel, escape the Empire, and survive in any of the human countries without anyone’s help.
A gated high-class suburb waited on the other side of the lake. Rhangyl’s house wasn’t far from this place. They could easily get there without standing out by blending into the morning crowd of pedestrians.
Dalura was able to fix George’s disguise glyph so they shouldn’t have a problem on that front. Amaranth hadn’t spoken much, but his attitude came across as relieved more than anything, although he demonstrated plenty of embarrassment as well. Lance returned to his usual aloof self and talked about whatever came to his mind with George, who was more than happy to go along. As they all walked by the shoreline, it finally dawned on Rhangyl the insanity they had just survived.
For a moment, he truly didn’t know if he would ever escape that cursed forest. The memory would haunt him forever. They probably couldn’t step foot in there ever again. Rhangyl didn’t intend to try even if that wasn’t the case. At the very least, the party walked with higher spirits after the ordeal. George’s biggest concern at the moment was the puffling egg. He couldn’t be separated from the thing after feeling it move a little. Rhangyl was almost surprised when they didn’t have any trouble reaching his home. He expected the manhunt to continue here, or another development to impede them, but it seemed nobody was looking for them yet. The front gate was well maintained, the garden remained clean, and nothing about the neighbors immediately alarmed him. The main residence stood way further back, across the garden path, so nobody would be able to spy on them from the outside.
Rhangyl narrowed his eyes as he walked up his porch. The door frame had been replaced. He quickly scrambled for his keys and swung open the door, relieved that the lock hadn’t been changed. Nothing else appeared wrong inside. The rest of the party hurried behind him, alarmed by his sudden panic. Rhangyl didn’t know what to tell them.
There were plenty of explanations, but none of them made him comfortable either way. Rhangyl went on to thoroughly search the house for anything out of the ordinary. He didn’t find anything at first glance, which only furthered his anxiety. At a certain point, it became obvious that he had to give up on explaining the new door frame. His tired mind had slowly turned him paranoid. He wasn’t the only one running on fumes. Everyone needed to rest. They were all covered in a smelly layer of swamp grime that stuck to everything they touched. The cleaning staff were going to quit when they saw this mess.
In the past, this would’ve ruined his day. Not anymore. Rhangyl just wanted a bed now. The party had already settled into a large oval couch in the main living room. There were enough guest rooms to accommodate them, but they didn’t have any intention of leaving their current spots.
And then Rhangyl heard someone approaching the door. The party jumped to their feet as the doorknob turned. They didn’t have time to hide. Their muck would give them away before they could clean it. Rhangyl’s heart dropped, though, when the man at the door said:
