[SPOILERS] Farscape Comics [SPOILERS]
I admit when the show premiered, I wasn't watching TV much and it flew beneath my radar. I was lucky enough to catch and binge the series when Farscape came to Prime last year. Needles to say, I really, really, really, enjoyed it! :)
I was pleasantly surprised to discover there's a canon comic series for it. Thirsty for more Farscape, I set out on a mission to find these comics. I managed to get a hold of the series and finished reading it. The comics were a royal pain to find! Because of the difficulty in locating the comics, I hope to provide fellow Scapers who might not get a chance to read the series with a means to find out what happened next in the Farscape saga and to their favorite characters.
"Do we really need this when there are Farscape wikis?"
Maybe or maybe not. I just know when I consulted a couple of them, they didn't provide enough information for my tastes. I'm aiming to provide a "meatier" summary which hopefully folks enjoy. You may appreciate this or dislike it but I focused on key information regarding characters and events which progress the storyline. This means I intentionally left out bits which include jokes, Easter eggs, and such. I figured I'd leave something out for people to enjoy if they ever do get a chance to read the comics.
I read the series and structured my summary according to this website:
Thank you to the author! His order is spot on.
To specify which comics are in the summary, it DOES NOT include the following:
—The canon tales of D'Argo (Lament, Trial, and Quest). Chronologically, these take place during the TV series. They don't add much to the show nor do they impact what happens afterward. They're mostly about D'Argo's backstory and an adventure he takes part in with Jool. If D'Argo is one of your favorite characters, it's worth a read.
—The non-canon WildStorm comics (War Torn).
The summary DOES include the following comics:
—The main self-titled canon series. The story takes place after the events of the TV show.
—The Scorpius series. These comics are canon as well and tie into the main series.
If you feel the summary is a bit much, I added a "Key Points - The Basics" section. Without further ado:
Vol 1 - The Beginning of the End of the Beginning
The comic series starts with the same scene which ended the TV series. John and Aeryn are holding their son while looking out at space from Moya. They named their son after their close fallen friend, D'Argo, and John affectionally nicknames their son "Deke." John, Aeryn, Chiana, Rygel, Pilot, Noranti, and Jothee are present on Moya. All is as would be expected aboard the Leviathan except Chiana and Jothee are hooking up, again (due to Chiana dealing with D'Argo's loss).
The story commences with Rygel receiving a transmission from one of his wives. Rygel's wife informs him after the armistice which occurred as a result of the Peacekeeper Wars from the TV series, there is much unrest on Hyneria. She tells Rygel there are forces ready to help him take back his throne. Rygel departs Moya taking Chiana and Jothee with him to help. Naturally, Rygel and company end up walking into a trap set by the usurper. It is revealed the usurper is being counseled none other than the infamous Scorpius!
When John and Aeryn get word of the trap, they go to help their captured friends. John and Aeryn also come across a mysterious stalker targeting Deke en route to their mission. Their son manifests some special power as a result of the run-in. John and Aeryn are captured by the Hynerians but manage to escape and regroup with the others. The party eventually formulates a plan to help Rygel successfully reclaim his throne. Rygel banishes Scorpius from the Hynerian Empire and leaves Moya to rule in Hyneria.
Vol 2 - Strange Detractors
While on a shopping trip on a near by planet, John appears to pick up an illness. It spreads to others on the ship including Moya. The illness causes acute paranoia and has people turn against each other. Reports from all over indicate the illness has become an epidemic. The situation on Moya gets so dire, John is forced to take Deke and flee to a near by Diagnosan.
John meets Sikozu and Grunchlk when he arrives looking for help. They help John get cured. Sikozu tells John the reason she joined with Scorpius (TV series) was to help free her people, the Kalish, from the Scarrens. Despite being successful, the act was viewed as traitorous by her people and she was exiled. Sikozu also reveals the illness, if left untreated, results in the afflicted becoming suicidal.
John makes haste to Moya with a batch of antivirus accepting Sikozu's help and taking her with him. They succeed in curing everyone on Moya and getting the antivirus to everyone else. Sikozu ends up rejoining the crew of Moya.
Vol 3 - Gone and Back
The crew of Moya decide to visit Rygel on his home planet. Rygel offers to help John and Aeryn determine the cause of Deke's special ability. A Hynerian doctor triggers the ability and John is sent to an alternate reality as a result of the testing. Deke's power is similar to "Einstein" the Ancient who John encountered on the iceburg in the TV series.
John finds D'Argo and Zhaan still alive in the alternate reality. Pilot gets John up to speed on the events which have transpired. Most of it is similar to John's actual reality except he never met Aeryn and stayed married to Katralla (TV series) with whom he has a daughter. John, of course, wishes to find out what's become of Aeryn. He consults with Scorpius (on good terms in this reality) for help locating her. Scorpius refers John to a tracker named Roiin. John also decides to have his daughter checked for Deke's power before he leaves with Roiin. He finds she doesn't have it.
While searching for Aeryn with Roiin, John discovers Roiin is the mysterious stalker from his reality. Roiin undertakes Black Op style contracts including assassination. They successfully locate Aeryn who is with her son when they encounter her. During the chaos which ensues, it is revealed Aeryn's son possesses the same power as Deke and triggers it sending John back to his own reality. John's experience in the alternate reality serves to inform him that Deke's special ability comes from Aeryn and reveal the identity of the mysterious stalker, Roiin. All of which is true in his reality.
Vol 4 - Tangled Roots
Aeryn goes on a personal mission by herself to find out why Deke's power comes from her. Her search brings her to the planet Prybella where former Peacekeepers who can answer her questions reside. While there, Aeryn also comes across Bialar Crais's parents and her former lover, Tam Velorek, who she betrayed while in the Peacekeepers (TV series). Tam explains how instead of being executed as per Peacekeeper law for his crime, Bialar jettisoned him in a shuttle bound for Prybella after catching him in the act of praying before his execution.
John goes on his own mission with Chiana to intercept Roiin. They track him down and Chiana goes undercover to get close to him. Unfortunately, she gets separated from John while in Roiin's company. During her time with him, Chiana starts to fall in love with Roiin despite his mission regarding Deke. John eventually catches up to them and manages to "rescue" Chiana but Roiin escapes.
The people who Aeryn believed to shed some light on Deke's condition are unable to do so. However, Aeryn does come across a couple who can, Bialar's parents. They explain how they’ve harbored a deep resentment toward the Peacekeepers for taking both their sons. Their resentment extended so far they concocted a plan to provide the Peacekeepers with contaminated food and executed it. The contaminated food was filled with highly volatile mutagens and is the result of Deke's condition. Aeryn was outraged but spared Bialar's parents. Tam helps Aeryn cope with the news by introducing her to a Sebacean religious text. Although not completely sold on it, Aeryn seems to find religion and heads back to Moya.
Vol 5 - Red Sky at Morning
A species named the Grennij arrives on Pilot's home world and begins killing his people. The Pilot race is a peaceful one with no weapons to defend themselves. They transmit a mass distress call informing of the attack and requesting help. The transmission is received by the crew of Moya who decides to help. Although eager to help his people, Pilot is reluctant return to his home world due to the nature in which he left against his family's and the elders' wishes (TV series). During this time, Noranti falls unconscious and won't wake up.
The crew of Moya arrives on Pilot's home world to find a small group of Peacekeeper deserters in a Leviathan led by a woman named Captain Zobrek. Zobrek's group also answered the distress call. After bickering a little, both parties agree to work together to help Pilot's race against the Grennij. John, Jothee, and Sikozu go on a reconnaissance mission while the rest of the combined forces defend the Pilots. John and company find out the Grennij are merely shock troops setting the staging ground for an invasion. John's group gets spotted by the Grennij and Sikozu is badly injured in the fire fight while fleeing. They manage to escape. The defenders are eventually able to defeat the Grennij ground forces but seem to be getting overwhelmed in space when Grennij reinforcements arrive. Luckily, a group of Luxans also answered the Pilot's distress call and arrive in time to drive off the Grennij completely.
The Luxans are impressed by Jothee and offer him a place amongst their ranks. Jothee accepts and leaves Moya. Pilot decides to reconcile with his family and is met with open arms. Everyone is still uncertain as to who sent the Grennij as a preemptive invasion force. Sikozu recovers from her wounds. Noranti, on the other hand, mysteriously cocoons.
Vol 6 - Compulsions
Moya's party and Zobrek's Peacekeepers decide to remain together while they cooperatively investigate the Grennij. Along the way, Noranti emerges from her cocoon as a young adult woman. Also, Chiana can't hold back her feelings for Roiin any longer and leaves Moya to find him.
The investigation leads them to a Grennij munitions supplier, Commandant Grayza. John, Aeryn, Zobrek, and Lt. Kirlix (Zobrek's ace pilot) decide to confront Grayza and inform her of the threat the Grennij pose. Despite their warning, Grayza imprisons them. Grayza declares her intention to keep supplying the Grennij regardless of their agenda in hopes of allying with their superiors. Grayza's second in command, Admiral Josbek, disapproves of Grayza's actions but remains compliant. Noranti ends up breaking into Grayza's ship and freeing John along with everyone else. Instead of fleeing the ship, they decide to double down and overtake the communications room. They broadcast Grayza's plans and illustrate how they're against the fundamental Peacekeeper code before getting captured, again.
Fortunately, the nudge was just enough to push Admiral Josbeck over to their side. He frees them and helps them sabotage Grayza's business with the Grennij before imprisoning her. Josbeck and Zobreck believe the Peacekeepers need a new leader capable of ushering in a new era honorably. They choose Aeryn to be the new commandant. Meanwhile, Chiana finds and confronts Roiin. She finds he feels the same way about her. Chiana tries to get him to forget about pursuing Deke but he refuses to abandon his contract so she decides to accompany him. When he finds out Chiana adjusted Moya to resist his tracking, Roiin goes to consult with a Kalish contact hoping to workaround Chiana's modification. The contact tells Roiin he's unable to help on account of his home world being extremely quiet due to someone invading the Scarrans and winning!
Scorpius Vol 1 - Let Sleeping Dogs Lie
A frozen desolate planet is the place Rygel chose for Scorpius's banishment. While marooned, Scorpius reflects on past events when a fleet lands on the planet. It's the Grennij making an emergency repair stop. Scorpius observes the advanced technology of their ships but primitive infantry weaponry and makes the same deduction John and company made, the Grennij are working for someone else. This piques Scorpius's interest as well as being motivated to get off the planet. He quickly forms a successful plan to be taken aboard the main Grennij ship as an asset providing intel.
Scorpius kills the Grennij captain and assumes command of the fleet. He learns the Grennij are acting at the behest of a race called the Kkore, about whom little is known. Naturally, Scorpius decides to go further down the rabbit hole. He leads the Grennij fleet through a successful operation in order to gain an audience with the Kkore. Scorpius offers to serve them. The Kkore briefly interrogate him before determining his intel maybe of value. Scorpius is introduced to the Kkore leader, Ddan-myr. She offers him a place amongst the Kkore, if Scorpius is willing to prove himself worthy. Ddan-myr reveals the Kkore have been observing and gathering information on all the species of the region for a long time and are now executing their plan to invade the Uncharted Territories to conquer them all!
Scorpius Vol 2 - Glorious Basterds
The Kkore send Scorpius with an armada to confront the Scarran Empire to offer them the option of submitting to their rule and being spared or being destroyed. After Scorpius issues terms to the Scarran emperor, all of his crew disappear. A Kkore general hails Scorpius and informs him this is part of his test. All the personnel of the fleet were elaborate projections and there are no weapons on the ships. Scorpius is outraged the Kkore used his hatred of the Scarrans as a means to bait him into this predicament. Left with little recourse, he decides to try and bluff the Scarrans. Scorpius is successful and is able to get them to submit.
While with the Kkore, Scorpius witnesses the invasions of various worlds in the Uncharted Territories. He learns this invasion is one of many the Kkore are planning for other galaxies and dimensions. Ddan-myr reveals to Scorpius that she's aware of information he tried to hide from them but doesn't care as long as Scorpius submits. Being several steps ahead of Scorpius, he begins to despair thinking the Kkore maybe his superiors and nigh invincible. As he imagines a dreary existence of being a Kkore underling for the rest of his days, Scorpius hears the news that Aeryn is now the commandant of the Peacekeepers. He checks the Kkore's computers and finds they are unaware of this and know nothing of John Crichton. This leads Scorpius to consider remaining with the Kkore out of self preservation or attempting to ally himself with John as the tides of war are turned on unexpected moments and there's nothing more unpredictable in the universe than John Crichton.
Vol 7 - The War for the Uncharted Territories
As the Kkore invasions continue, Aeryn proceeds to unify what's left of the Peacekeepers. She even accepts Captain Braca into their ranks on account of their current situation and hearing he was amongst the first to desert when Grayza assumed leadership of the Peacekeepers. The Peacekeepers combine their intel which allows them to identify the Kkore threat and learn of Scorpius's involvement with them. While the Peacekeepers are determining their next move, Pilot intercepts a message intended for Sikozu from Scorpius. Scorpius informs her, upon his suggestion, Sizoku's people were eliminated. This news devastates Sikozu. During this time, the Kkore invasion path leads them to the Peacekeepers who they ambush. The battle doesn't go well for the Peacekeepers. Admiral Josbek dies early in the fight eventually followed by Lt. Kirlix. Aeryn gives the order to retreat. Moya is hit during the fight which delays her ability to Starburst. Sikozu sacrifices herself by going on a kamikaze mission to buy Moya the time she needs and what's left of the Peacekeepers manage to escape.
Scorpius is having a conversation with Ddan-myr in front of the captured leaders of a number of species when he notices Rygel is one of them. After Ddan-myr leaves, Scorpius has a conversation with Rygel. Rygel explains he should have expected the Kkore. When Scorpius asks him how that's possible, he tells of how Zhaan use to pray the Kkore be kept away during their early days on Moya. He just didn't pay her much mind. This information extremely interests Scorpius. Scorpius leaves to have another conversation with Ddan-myr who informs him of their plans to eliminate the Grennij as stage two of the invasion having outlived their usefulness. Learning this causes Scorpius to reconsider his place amongst the Kkore. As he reassesses his situation, he remembers his conversation with Rygel and analyses the Kkore's invasion pattern noticing they happen to avoid a particular region of space. This prompts Scorpius to break Rygel out of imprisonment and take him along to provide information as they both flee from the Kkore to follow up on Scorpius's discovery.
When the Peacekeepers arrive safely away from the Kkore, John leaves Moya on a mission while Aeryn is on damage control taking stock of their losses and trying to figure out the Peacekeepers next move. When it seems like they've come to the conclusion that all hope maybe lost, John returns with a large contingent of ships consisting of various species the Kkore has invaded. Everyone agrees to band together and form an alliance to combat the Kkore. Aeryn issues a distress call untraceable by the Kkore urging all to join their cause and rally to their point. Chiana and Roiin come across this call. After witnessing the aftermath of the Kkore's carnage and coming to the notion his client is dead, Roiin comes to the conclusion his contract is no longer important and the Kkore menace is a more pressing matter. He and Chiana travel to the rally point. Around this time, a Kkore reconnaissance fleet comes across some of the alliance on a resource acquisition mission. John joins the fight managing to do well but not quite enough to defeat the attackers. Just as it would seem John is about to perish, the Kkore fleet is destroyed by Roiin and others en route to the rally point. John and Aeryn are initially hostile to Roiin but given their dire predicament and witnessing how Roiin helped save John, they acknowledge his declaration the Kkore are the bigger threat and cautiously accept his aid. Roiin further eases their minds by stating he is no longer under any obligation to carry out the contract on their son. They dodged a bullet with the Kkore fleet this time but the damage had been done. The Kkore fleet managed to transmit the alliance's location before being destroyed. Ddan-myr hears of it and orders an all out offensive strike on them.
Scorpius and Rygel's trip leads them to Zhaan's home planet, Delvia. They're surprised to find Stark among the Delvians. When Scorpius and Rygel tell the Delvians of the Kkore, they become distraught. During this time, a couple of Kkore fleets manage to trickle in trying to wipe out the alliance before the Kkore armada is due to arrive. The alliance manages to fend them off with reinforcements arriving at the rally point in the form of the Luxans with Jothee and eventually the Delvians with Scorpius, Rygel, and Stark. The Delvians reveal their ancestors use to be a sect of Kkore who didn't care for conquest and settled on Delvia. They evolved through generations of living on Delvia and selective breeding which is why they look quite different from the Kkore. The Delvians tell of a weapon they possess which could help turn the tide of the battle but only strong Delvians of faith had enough power to charge the weapon for use. John comes up with a plan to have Stark act as a conduit and facilitate a multi-species ritual to charge the weapon. Rygel witnesses Scorpius quietly leave in a ship while preparations are being made for the ritual. The ritual is a success and evens the playing field when the Kkore arrive and an epic battle ensues. During the fight, Jothee dies bravely along with his crew helping to save the people engaged with the ritual. Noranti sacrifices herself to help save Deke. When the battle seems to get a little tight, Scorpius shows up with a Grennij fleet to help secure the victory. Ddan-myr is given the option to surrender but refuses and is destroyed. What little of the Kkore were left either fled back home or were killed by those they invaded.
Time shifts forward to Deke as an old man surrounded by a small number of children of varying species at night. It appears he was telling them the story of what happened up until now. The children ask if that's how the story ends? They proceed to ask him other questions, as well. Did Rygel return to Hyneria afterward? What did Scorpius do? Did Chiana go with Roiin or stay on Moya? Deke smiles and tells them it's the end of "this" story but not the end of "the" story. He reminds them it's time for bed and perhaps he'll tell the "next" story tomorrow night. This is how the comic series ends.
Key Points - The Basics
- Aeryn becomes commandant of the Peacekeepers.
- Deke possesses a special power which can augment reality.
- Chiana finds her soulmate, Roiin.
- Rygel returns to Hyneria and retakes his throne.
- Sikozu, Jothee, and Noranti die.
- John, Scorpius, Pilot, Moya, and Stark are all present and act in their normal capacities.
- Captain Zobrek and her Peacekeeper crew along with the villainous Kkore and Grennij are new additions to the Farscape-verse.
- The series begins episodically before building to a large story arc involving an epic invasion of the Uncharted Territories by a species called the Kkore who are from the Grey Space region.
- Although their appearances are radically different, the Kkore and the Delvians are related.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. The comics captured the feel of Farscape quite well. I found the way the Delvian weapon worked at the end to be a little on the light side. If ever there was a reason to use the Wormhole weapon again, I'd imagine this would have been one of them. Either way, it wasn't a deal breaker for me. The introduction of unique characters like Captain Zobrek seemed solid. I wouldn't be surprised if they made an appearance or were referenced in future Farscape content. Scorpius is still a...badass! I 'm not really fond of villian-types but his character transitioned well in the comics. Lastly, I was sad to see Sikozu go. I really wished they would have kept her character alive. That would be my only other knock against the series, a chunk of the characters died. Three from the TV series plus two of the newly introduced ones that would have been interesting (Kirlix and Josbek). Still, the series was worth the trouble finding and definitely worth reading. I wonder how much of comic content will make it into the new Farscape material?
Well, I hoped you liked it. Please let me know if I mixed something up or got it wrong so I can correct it. Also, feel free to ask questions. I'll try my best to answer them.
