Thank You Essien- TOTW Walker CB Quick Review
I chose to go with Walker because, well, look at that pace and stamina and above average reactions and ball control for a CB. My only concerns with him going in were his average composure and defensive awareness and below average strength and aggression for a CB. That paired with the H/H workrate had me wondering how many times I'd get to test his pace out...
I used him with mid Rijkaard and Ederson in goal for a game before switching back to baby Lev.
Chemistry - Guardian for the Standing Tackle and dribbling boost. Switched to Sentinel after 3 matches for strength and aggression boost.
Formation/Tactics - 4-2-3-1 drop back 1 depth meta opening 15 minutes then 4-2-2-2 or 4-1-2-1-2 5 depth heavy touch.
Pace-Nothing needed to be said here. Dude's fast and he's fast for the whole game because of that 90 stamina.
Shooting- Even with the +15 to his jumping, he was never really there for set pieces. I'm not quite sure why or maybe because I was focusing on Rijkaard because of his height, but he never really found himself in the mix.
Passing- He's not master class as his vision would suggest and you could feel it with the random errant pass but when he hit on a pass, it was pretty stellar. In the first game with him I was able to intercept a pass and bring it up to the half line where he lined a through ball that resulted in a goal and a RQ, so I was excited.
Dribbling- With guardian on him you could def feel the control boost. The only problem was that you could really feel the lack of strength for his position and that combined with the average aggression, well...it just led to a lot of moments of him watching people go by...
Defending- Well, this is what we need the most and after 10 matches in Rivals with him, his 78 Awareness (88 with chem) starts to show. Pair that with a lack of aggression and he's one of those guys that if you're not controlling him and manually tackling, you're going to be mad at him. If you are controlling him...and only him and your timing with tackling is spot on you can make him quite the nuisance.
Physical-That stamina is such a pull for me this year, but his lack of aggression and strength show up throughout each match, even with the added sentinel boost.
Overall- He's very good at being fast and a pest and i would recommend him for any of the higher tier manual defenders out there. He's fun to use but in a 2 CB formation, he tends to drift too far forward and lacks the muscle and aggression I want in a CB. I could see him being great in a 3 ATB formation with a couple other bruisers to bully guys while he runs around pestering everyone else but I wouldn't want to play him as a CDM as his lack of vision (palpatine voice) does show up in pressure situations.
Similar - Walker is the Bentley / "mystery ball pace upgrade" version of Lucas Hernandez if Lucas were a used Hyundai Genisis.
Next Up - Both Hierro and Both Vidic.

Great Squads From History - Inter Milan 2004-2005
For the first edition, we will take a look back to a squad that is near and dear to Interista’s, Inter Milan’s 2004-05 squad, a squad that gets forgotten often due to a variety of reasons namely being caught in the middle of two eras for Inter Milan, superior squads of Juve and AC Milan, and obviously due to the upcoming calciopoli scandal that overshadowed everything in Italian football for a long while with its effects still lingering on today.
This squad holds the distinction of being the team with the most draws in a single serie A season, their inability to start and finish a game with consistency was their ultimate downfall in failing to with the scudetto, also Juve & Milan had even more impressive squads at the time. This squad became a memorable one by winning the Italian cup, a win that ended a 7 year barren spell for Inter with their last Trophy being a UEFA cup in 1998. This also was their first domestic trophy since 1989, and their first Italian Cup since 1982
• The Manager:
o Roberto Mancini: famously cut his playing career short to take a managerial position with Fiorentina, the dapper don would win an Italian Cup trophy in his first season as a manager immediately establishing himself as a top coaching prospect in a country known for making world class football managers, he’d then move to Lazio where he’d again win an Italian Cup honor in 2 seasons there, this successful start to his coaching career made him a highly sought after commodity with Inter finally winning his services, he had to leave Lazio due to the financial difficulties they were facing at the time. He’d go on to win 3 (2?) scudetti with Inter along with 2 Italian cup titles
• The Players: - Goalkeepers:
o #1 : Francesco Toldo : a graduate of city Rivals AC Milan academy, this touring goalkeeper is a considered a club legend for both Fiorentina and Inter Milan, having spent 9 memorable seasons with the former and 8 seasons with the latter, his greatest moment came in the 2000 EURO cup where due to injury circumstances to his teammate Gigi Buffoon he was handed the starting spot for the national team, he had a legendary tournament playing as good as any goalkeeper could be asked to, with his greatest match being the one vs Netherlands in the semi finals.
o #12 : Alberto Fontana : made his name as a good goalkeeper helping Atalanta achieve promotion to serie A, was signed to be a decent backup, nothing more nothing less really.
o #15 : Fabián Carini : a career backup goalkeeper, recently signed in a deal that sent Fabio Cannavaro to Juventus.
o #2: Iván Córdoba: in the middle of his legendry 12-year stint with Inter Milan. Made up for his short stature for a central defender with great athleticism, agility and quickness, making him one of that harder defenders to beat one on one, his qualities also made it possible for him to cover the left back position whenever there was shortage in players or a need to mark the oppositions right winger. Part of the treble winning squad in 2010.
o #3: Nicolás Burdisso : Just signed from Boca Juniors, a part of the squad that won 3 out of 4 Copa Libertadores titles from 2000 to 2003, he’d immediately be handed a starting spot in the team, eventually his inconsistency and mistake proneness made him lose his starting spot, however his versatility playing in all defensive positions saw him become a fantastic bench utility option, plugging in any needed position in defense. He is also known for instigating many on field fights
o #4: Javier Zanetti “Il Trattore “: Arguably Inter’s greatest ever player, officially awarded captaincy in 2001 even though he was already wearing the armband for most of the two previous years in place of the perennially injured Ronaldo. Zanetti joined in 1995 from Argentine side Banfield and went on to have a legendary 19-year career with Inter winning everything there is to win for a club, known for his calm demeanor and utmost professionalism. He is Inter’s all time leader in club appearances. Part of the treble winning squad in 2010.
o #11: Siniša Mihajlović : after winning the Italian Cup in the previous season, Mihajlović asked and was granted release from his contract with Lazio as he wanted to play for his close friend Roberto Mancini in his last hurrah. A legendary Yugoslavian/Serbian player known as one of if not the greatest free kick taker in football history, part of the European Cup winning Red Star Belgrade in 1991, and scudetto winning Lazio squad in 2000, even in his advanced years as a footballer, he still played an important part for this Inter squad.
o # 13: Zé Maria: one day he is Cafu, the next day he Nicola Legrottaglie, you’d never know with this typical Brazilian fullback. Part of the Copa Libertadores winning Palmeiras squad in 1999 and Copa América & FIFA Confederations Cup Brazilian National team squad in 1997 he’d make a name for himself in Italy with Parma & Perugia, ultimately helping the latter reach the 3rd round in the UEFA cup, he joined Inter Milan in the summer of 2004 after his side was relegated despite their deep continental run, in his first season he’d mostly be a starter before losing his spot the next season and becoming a benchwarmer.
o #16: Giuseppe Favalli: a Lazio Legend and 1st in all time appearances made for them, he also along with Mihajlović decided to leave Lazio and join Inter to play for Roberto Mancini, a dependable defender who is also versatile in covering all defensive positions on the pitch.
o #23 Marco Materazzi: an Inter icon and cult hero and one of the most hated figures in Italian and world football, known for his roughhouse dirty play and being a general asshole in every sense of the word, that doesn’t take away his defensive capabilities and value to his team as a leader, he also was a decent goalscorer for a defender. while never an undisputed starter, his 10-year stint with Inter that started in 2001 saw him become one of the most revered players by Inter fans, he was the yang to Zanetti’s yin, complete opposites who together won everything with Inter. Most famously he was the receiving end of Zidane’s infamous headbutt. Part of the treble winning squad in 2010.
o #5 Emre Belözoğlu: a known racist piece of shit who happens to be really good at playing football, started his career with Turkish giants Galatasaray, he’d help them win 3 Turkish League titles and one UEFA cup title before joining Inter Milan in 2001, the start of his stint with Inter was promising, two seasons in and he’d win Inter’s player of the year award. A short tricky playmaker, fantastic at creating goalscoring opportunities for his teammates, ultimately his injury proneness made him fall down in the pecking order before being sold after this season to Newcastle United where he’ll continue being a racist piece of shit who happens to be really good at playing football
o #6 Cristiano Zanetti: also known as “ oh that’s not Javier” , an archetypical Italian Regista, calm & collected with the ball at his feet spraying it left and right, underappreciated his entire career due to contant injuries and not being one for the spotlight, a scudetto winner with Roma in 2001, he’d join Inter after and spend 5 years with them, one of the few player who’d play for 4+ teams of the seven sisters and be well respected by fans of all of them.
o #8 Edgar Davids : Part of the champions league winning Ajax squad in 1995, his move to Italy hit a hiccup as he failed to Establish himself in a star studded AC Milan squad, he’d join Juventus after one season and establish himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world winning 3 scudetti with them, after 6 years he’d lose his starting spot due to injuries and join a struggling Barcelona team in January 2004 helping them turnaround their season and finish 2nd to Valencia, Barcelona not signing him in the summer of 2004 caused uproar with their fans, he’d instead join Inter Milan . his bouts with Glaucoma made him elect to play with sunglasses which helped make him an iconic & defining player for his generation
o #14 Juan Sebastián Verón “La Brujita”: part of a legendary Estudiantes de La Plata father-son duo alongside his father Juan Ramón Verón, a traditional old school playmaker with accurate passing, a fantastic shot, and good ball control. he’d have successful spells with Parma and Lazio winning a UEFA cup title in 1998 with the former and a scudetto with the later in 2000 among other trophies, in the summer of 2001 he’d make the infamous switch to Manchester United where he’d spend 3 disastrous years in England winning a premier league title in 2003 in his 2nd season with United before joining Chelsea the following summer where he’d mostly be nursing injuries, with Mourinho’s arrival he’d be loaned out to Inter in the summer of 2004 where he’d spend 2 good seasons that saw flashes of his earlier brilliance, after 2006 he’d choose to return to Estudiantes where he fully returned to form and won a Copa Libertadores title in 2009. He currently serves as Chairman at Estudiantes
o # 19 Esteban Cambiasso : an Argentinos Juniors/Real Madrid youth product, Real Madrid would send him back to Argentina to gain experience with Independiente & River Plate, he’d win Clausura in 2002 with the latter before returning to Madrid and becoming a rotation option for their 2003 La Liga winning squad, he’d fail to win a spot with Madrid and his contract was allowed to expire in the summer of 2004, he’d sign for Inter Milan on a free, embarking on a 10-year stint that made him another cult hero for the club becoming one of the best box to box midfielders in the world, known for scoring important goals and his incredible consistency. Part of the treble winning squad in 2010.
o # 21 Giorgos Karagounis: the legendary Greek player joined in the summer of 2003 after making a name of himself as one of the continent’s best playmakers with Greek giants Panathinaikos, his first season would be plagued with Injuries, in the summer of 2004 he was part of the Greek Squad that pulled one of the greatest upsets in Football history winning the EURO Cup against Portugal in Lisbon, his second season with Inter after his national triumph wouldn’t fare any better unfortunately
o # 25 Dejan Stanković : another Lazio signee, a winner of scudetto in 2000 with Lazio and one of the most sought after players at the time with interest from Juve, Milan and reportedly Man United at the time, in the winter window in 2004 he’d choose to join Inter Milan as his current coach Roberto Mancini was rumored to move in the upcoming summer. He immediately earned a starting spot and became a beloved cult hero known for his incredible strong shot and long range goals. Part of the treble winning squad in 2010.
o #7 Andy van der Meyde : after winning two Dutch leagues with Ajax the diminutive Dutch winger would join Inter Milan in the summer of 2003, he’d show flashes of brilliance typical with Dutch forwards/wingers however injuries would stunt his career, he’d eventually be sold to Everton where again he’d show small flashes of brilliance but never on a consistent basis due to injuries, eventually him being labeled an injury prone player and other host of personal problems saw his career cut short and his contract terminated , he’d attempt a comeback in 2012 with PSV but to no avail.
o #9 Julio Ricardo Cruz : a towering figure, typical target man with a good touch, he’d win two league titles with River Plate before joining Feyenoord and winning one league title with them as well, he’d move to Italy and join Bologna where he’d score at a respectable rate before accepting a move to Inter Milan where it was understood he’d be used in a rotation role. He’d become a dependable threat from the bench, always coming in and providing an instant spark, scoring at a consistent rate during this spell, widely beloved by Inter fans.
o #10 Adriano “L'Imperatore”: one of football’s biggest what ifs, after signing him in 2001 in a convoluted deal that involved Flamengo, PSG and a couple of football agencies, Inter would slowly nurture his talent sending him in co-ownership/ loan deals to Fiorentina & Parma, he was eventually handed a spot in the team starting in the winter of 2004 and he immediately hit the ground running becoming Inter’s leading goal-scorer and main attacking threat, starting for Brazil in that summer’s Copa América winning the tournament’s best player and top goal-scorer awards. A seldom before seen combination of strength, agility and ball control that can only be rivaled by his eventual teammate Zlatan. the death of his father later in 2004 would slowly send his career in a downward spiral as he succumbed to depression, alcoholism and reported drug abuse. On a personal note peak Adriano remains one of my favorite players of all time.
o #18 Kily González : after a successful spell in Spain with Real Zaragoza & Valencia, winning a La Liga title with the latter in 2002, he’d eventually lose his starting spot to up and coming youngster Vicente, he’d follow his coach Héctor Cuper to Inter Milan in 2003, he’d have a decent 3 year spell with Inter. a winger in the most classical sense of the term, rarely a goal-scorer, preferring to create opportunities to his teammates with his crosses.
o #20 Álvaro Recoba : President Moratti’s favorite player ever, joined in 1997 he’d fail to establish himself early and would be sent on loan to minnows Venezia, he’d immediately show his talent there scoring and assisting at an incredible rate eventually earning a starting spot for Inter in the next season. His career with Inter would be plagued with injuries and inconsistency, he’d be accused continually of disappearing in games where he fails to establish himself early “ think Morata but like way more talented” known for his curling free kick technique and good scoring ability from outside the area.
o #30 Obafemi Martins : A Nigerian wonderkid scouted in the streets of Lagos, he’d join the youth team at Reggiana in serie C1 before Inter came-a-knocking and bought him for a little less than a million Euro, he’d move through Inter’s youth teams before eventually earning spot in the first team at the tender age of 18. His goalscoring record was admirable and he was on his way to become an Inter legend if he had continued with the same trend. However, calciopoli happened, Ibra and Crespo came in and Oba was deemed surplus to requirement, shortsighted decision in my humble opinion, he’d ply his trade in the Premier League next with Newcastle United, famous for his acrobatic goal celebration.
o #32 Christian Vieri: after spending the 8 past years at 8 different clubs, Vieri would join Inter in 1999 for a then world record fee and stay for 6 years becoming a club talisman and most dangerous scoring threat, a classical target man with amazing positional awareness and heading abilities, a consistent scoring threat during his peak, won top goal-scorer in once each in Spain & Italy, this would be his last and frankly worst season with Inter before his infamous fallout with Moratti. He’d spend years even barred from talking about Inter due to his lawsuit against Moratti, he only recently reconciled with the club he’s most associated with.
• Memorable moments in no particular order
o Inter 5 – 0 Messina : featuring an Adriano hattrick, a Mihajlović free kick, and Toldo getting sent off almost exactly at the midway point of the game
o Inter 3 – 2 Sampdoria : with 6 minutes to go, Inter are trailing 0 – 2 , 3 goals in quick succession from Martins, Vieri & Recoba saw them achieve a memorable comeback win
o Inter 2 – 2 Juventus : in their first meeting of the season, Inter were trailing 0 – 2 with 10 minutes to go before a furious comeback saw them rescue a point with goals from Vieri & Adriano
o Valencia 1 – Inter 5 : in a tough away champions league game, Inter thrashed Valencia with 5 goals
o Inter 3 – 2 Fiorentina : a fantastic back and forth game saw Inter eventually come out on top with a late game winner
o Inter 3 – 1 Porto : Adriano scores a famous hattrick to knock out the reigning European champs out of contention.
o Inter 2 – 0 Roma : Adriano scores twice to lead Inter to win the Italian Cup
