Rule 4 - Encourage Each Other

Rule 4 - Encourage Each Other
I started my journey with a kid sized acoustic guitar in 2002. I knew nothing, I remember it being out of tune and my father heard it not sounding right but he was no musician so didn't know much about tuning. I saw just happy to get the chance to play it. Oh boy did I play that thing, till the strings broke! We've all been there.
Fast forward some years later and i'm in junior school having guitar lessons during PE (I had a friend who also had lessons with the same teacher and I asked to join in with him so we ended up have a whole hour, I was also glad to skip PE!) I never enjoyed theory as much as just playing scales to whatever my teacher was playing and now I'm having to really learn about theory and I really enjoy it now. I also played my first guitar concert during this time, joined a band and I was in the choir so we had to learn theory or you'd be in trouble. I picked up marimba and the glock (the instruments, not the far the people type).
Highschool was a bummer, I didn't sign up for lessons, they were way too expensive I quit the choir during my first year, which really disappointed my choir master, he was livid. Basically told me and buddy to just get out. I think it pained him to lose us to academics, but that's what I'd come to that school for. This is also the time I begun to make electronic music, it was just so much more accessible. I remember staying at the school computer lab after class in the afternoon and downloading FL Studio's demo version, it might've been the dial-up days or restricted speeds but it took hours to get a copy. With my copy in a flash drive I was happy to load it onto my mum's old laptop. It was a terrible system but I was happy! I was making sounds, I remember not knowing how to change the tempo from 140bpm to something else. I didn't care. I messed around on the keyboard (I didn't know about midi controllers). I'd look at the arrangement of the demo songs that come with the program and just be in awe.
I was posting my music onto forums and MySpace (remember this one) whenever I could. Getting 10s, 100s and then 1000s of plays. This was before Facebook was a thing. I remember once getting to #8 on this massive music online chart and I could a special mention at assembly. Everyone though I was DJ. Nobody knew what a producer was or how songs were made.
In university is when I started to think of it as a career path. I started working more on my production. Still making electronic music. Last nights in my uni room with my roommate snoring blissfully, i'd be up just "composing" away. There's an EP of mine on beatport somewhere under a different name, it's terrible but it's mine. I was even hired by that label to be their A&R, I was just that happy to finally be involved in the industry. I also got my song on the radio for the first time, a DJ doing the graveyard shift agreed to play one of the songs from the EP. I'd never been more excited at 12:14am! (DJ Chuckie from the Netherlands was the first major DJ to support me and to this day i'm forever thankful to him)
In my second year of university I was starting to learn more about networking, I'd contacted a bunch of nationally famous DJs to get them to play my stuff, it was even house music, just some hybrid of industrial electronica. I didn't care I just wanted them to play it out. I found a guy in the UK named Max and he was really into my sound, he wanted me to come stay with and everything, had these massive plans, he made me believe it was possible. He'd be my first manager. My sound was improving. I didn't know about samples (kicks, snare etc) in that I just though you could only use what FL Studio gave you so those restrictions helped me grow and improve. I managed to get my first producer credit for an album during this time for one of my country's superstars. I remember the process of sending over stems so the project would get mastered in NYC! A top engineer working on my song WHAAAT?? I also broke through on beatport at this time, people were now buying my music. Actually people, spending money to buy my work. It was incredible.
I was still on just my laptop. No monitors with terrible headphones, real tin cans that thinned my sound. I'd reference on HiFi speakers so i'd get this really boomy sound in the low mids. After a while I learnt the wonders of EQ and compression. I signed to a major record label a year later and to this day i'm thankful for my time there, I only put out a handful of songs and only one single that went #1 on the radio (Spotify wasn't a thing yet). I learnt how to be a pro and how cutthroat the industry is. I remember being told to constantly make "hits". Things like "Make this like the new Avicii", we need it to sound like the number 1 and this number 4 on that charts. All I could think was no ways my old Acer laptop is gonna give you those kinda songs!
I left the major label and eventually went indie. This was a hard time, no major label team, no support, no sense of security. I was lost for a while and went through the hard times. I never truly stopped making music though, I expanded my sound. Learnt about sound design, mix techniques, mastering. Anything to prove that I was good enough. I linked up with an indie label and put out my most successful solo release to date "Feeling High", Spotify's HQ got in touch with my and said they'd be pushing the song themselves. I still have the email. The song took off, I got offers from big independent labels all over Europe and the USA. I'd worked with brands like DHL for their World Cup campaign and was moving into movies and TV work. I'd bought myself a powerful macbook and now my production had gone up levels. Got myself a sound card and a really good pair of headphones. A humble setup. All the rich kids at school had macbooks that their parents bought and I'd finally worked hard for mine. You should've seen the smile on my face when I took it out the box.
I've now moved on even further and even managed to buy myself a production PC that has no problem with any session I throw at it. AMD powered and I love it. Got myself a Fender Tele that i've always wanted and a nice 61 key midi controller. A decent pair of studio monitors and my sound improved even more. All of this on the back of my own work. Nothing came easy. I've managed to get a number #1 song in over 32 countries and have accumulated millions of views from my work. I've worked with the biggest brands in the world, sync my music to their ad campaigns.
Now I'm in Los Angeles having been asked to come and work here. It's been a decade full of learning and i'm looking forward to this next one. People will say never give up and I say it's okay to give up, give up and remember how that made you feel and then work hard to make sure you never feel like that again. You've got this!
